July 23, 2025 Update

Good Evening Portage Lakers!

How is it possible that it will be August next week? It seems like we just turned the calendar to July.

Independence Day: Thanks to everyone who participated in the July 4th Flotilla. The lake was full of energy that day - which was fun to see. And it was a beautiful day... until it wasn't! Several people on the lake had damage from the very quick but mighty storm system that hit just before 8 p.m. on the 4th.

Annual Association Potluck & Meeting: Our annual meeting will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23 at the Chris & Dan Wilde residence (11958 Fishermans Dr.). Please bring your own chair and a dish to share. Beverages will be provided. I'll send a separate email about a week prior as a reminder. If you have items you would like added to the agenda, please let me know by Friday, Aug. 8.

AIS/Curly Leaf Pondweed (CLP): The executive committee has been communicating regularly with PLM about treatment plans for CLP. The survey conducted by PLM in June affirmed what we all expected - that the CLP grew much more quickly this year than in the recent past. They recommended that we treat certain areas of open water next spring. We'll provide more info at the annual meeting - including a map of the areas needing treatment and the anticipated cost. I had someone ask how long it's been since PLM treated open water. According to their records, it was 2016.

Fall and Winter Gatherings: We anticipate scheduling monthly gatherings again in the "off-season." Kari Smith has graciously offered to help coordinate those events. We'll discuss possible dates for the September gathering at the annual meeting.

Portage Fishing Update: The bite seems to have really slowed down in the last few weeks. Overall, however, this has been a better season for those of us who like to wet a line. I've decided that in order to catch a walleye or crappie, I just need to go out targeting northern pike!

Have a great rest of the month!
